Mad Alice and Lady Peckett invite you on a thrilling walk through York’s shadowy past — a tour packed with chilling tales, gruesome twists, and ghostly secrets you will not hear anywhere else.
Some tours are led by the unforgettable Mad Alice, while others are brought to life by the captivating Lady Peckett — two unique guides who are as humorous as they are knowledgeable, each adding their own character, wit, and wickedly entertaining flair.
Perfect for families who love a dash of “Horrible History”, this unforgettable walking tour brings York’s historic streets to life with stories that are eerie, entertaining, and deliciously dark.
Hear about plague, Romans, Vikings, highwaymen, nobles, witches, executions, legends, and hauntings as you uncover the bloody, bizarre, and supernatural side of our remarkable city.
Whether you are a lifelong local or visiting York for the very first time, you are sure to discover something surprising about this extraordinary 2,000-year-old city.
Expect plenty of fun along the way too, as some tours include light-hearted audience participation — so a good sense of humour is strongly recommended.
The tour takes place outdoors and winds through the city centre, with sights that may include York Minster, the Shambles, and Clifford’s Tower. Routes and stories may vary, keeping every tour full of atmosphere and surprises.
Tours last approximately 90 minutes and go ahead in all weather conditions unless a severe weather warning is in place.
Please wear sensible shoes, dress for the weather, and bring an umbrella if the skies look suitably dramatic.
The tour is fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are no stairs, though the Shambles has cobbles; your guide will help you navigate them.
Hounds of Hell — and friendly dogs of every kind — are very welcome, and a fuss will absolutely be made of them.
