Mad Alice’s Bloody Execution Tour – Morning Tour
How about an interesting start to the day with this fascinating and macabre tour that delves right into the depths of Georgian criminality! Executions were rife during the 18th Century and York has all the best stories.
Join Mad Alice of the award winning Bloody Tour of York to hear all about the highwaymen, witches and murderers that met their fate at the Gallows and the stories of the Hangmen themselves.
Starting at the York Gin Shop, the tour will begin with a talk about what was thought to be the downfall of Georgian Society- Gin, as illustrated by William Hogarth in his infamous “Gin Lane” print.
From there we will begin our journey to the “most noble prison in the land” and the home of the many gallows. Did you know that York had more sets of gallows than anywhere else in the country?
Why were hangings so popular? What happened to women charged with Petty Treason? Did the Yorkshire Witch spring back to life in her coffin? Who is buried in St. George’s Churchyard whose name lives in infamy?
This tour will visit the finest Georgian Buildings around the eye of York and will even visit the shop of the Hangman’s rope maker.
Suitable for ages 8+ this tour contains graphic details of crimes and executions. This may not be suitable for wheelchair users but with prior notification an alternative route can be found.
